In 1982, Ridley Scott's tech-noir classic Blade Runner was met with skeptical audiences and empty theaters, thanks in part to a series of slapdash changes made after low test screening scores panicked the studio. But now alternative versions of the movie — more in line with the director's original vision — are widely available to curious viewers. As a result, the film's popularity has risen steadily over the years, along with a lot of burning questions. Blade Runner depicts a near future in which androids — known as replicants — are so advanced that they're virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. And most of the debate surrounding the film centers on whether its hero Rick Deckard, played by Harrison Ford, is a human or a replicant. Let's try to make some sense of it all...

Crazy thing about this whole movie is it makes you question life and wonder if humans are really replicants engineered by aliens from the past.. Guess we will never know lol

  • Senad Zeco

Deckart cant be replicant you moron because he bleeds. Also if they had superhuman strenght he would have climbed easily from where he hung. And the other replicant would not have bashed him so easily.

  • Spring Bloom

No, no, no. The whole point is DECKARD'S struggle with Humanity, his growing identification with replicants and his ultimate self-exile that leaves him uncertain of his own nature. The 'clues' are an expression of his deepening paranoia about that nature.Deckard being a replicant, completely negates any character struggle and any reason why we should care... just like the abhorrently unnecessary sequel.

What other iconic science fiction films would you like us to cover next?

  • Jesse Yasaitis

Maybe Gaff and Dekard are both replicants? They could have the same memories in common since there were only a finite amount of memories available?

  • Kyte

what is that background music i hear it all the time.

  • Hanna Bass

I must be a moron because Deckard being a replicant never entered my mind.

  • animist channel

While Decker is obviously a replicant in the movie, you at least did him justice by posing the question as it was intended. What does is mean to be alive?Or as Claudia Black put it in an improv moment in Stargate SG-1: "You are also a Turtle." Sentience is not a lineage. It's a condition.

  • Jona

Replicants are given MEMORIES not DREAMS and not MEMORIES OF DREAMS. A dream of a unicorn is of NO BENEFIT whatsoever to a replicant. Tyrell says they are a "cushion" for their emotions. So Gaff does not know Deckards dreams, the origami unicorn is the same as the others: a symbol of Deckards plight.A chicken for his cowardice. A stick man with an erection for his reaction to Rachel. A unicorn to symbolize his stuggle with his impossible to catch final target because he loves her. Also Unicorns are synonymous with uniqueness. It may also be a hint towards Rachels open ended lifespan as Deckard doesnt know how long hell have with her.Ive got no problems with people believing the Deckard=replicant theory but dont make out its bullet proof. Its got more holes in than Swiss cheese.

seriously??? you just provided a synopsis of views not a conclusive opinion!

Don't interrupt the clip with your talk about whether or not Deckard is a Replicant. It's just a movie !

  • RocketRacoon316

I like how Harrison is better at directing Ridleys film lol now his Alien's franchise is dipping, any other actor's wanna save it from him? XD the guy's seriously lost his touch, then again so has Harrison with geniusly getting out of StarWars early R.I.P Lucasfilm & him wanting to do 3 more Indiana film's after the Crystal Skull...yay?...

  • tuttt99

I'm with Phillip on this one!

  • blipperUT

I think Blade Runner had already become a major cult film before the alternative cutsbecame available. Dick's comments are probably the most pertinent we don't know if Decker is a replicant and it's not clear it makes any difference in his humanity.

  • Rich Schreiner

Oh, also, regarding Deckard. What was Tyrell's moto? "More human than human." What did Deckard do? He forgave Rachael for being a replicant and went off to spend his life with her: More human than human.

  • CryptoZoo Mauler

I've always felt that he wasn't a replicant.

  • Lycagos

gaff has killed his gf, the origami unicorn is his hopelessness to recreate the lost ideal woman love interest that he has killed... he killed his love, he hates deckard but his loss make him advise deckard to have faith in the android that she can be a living one in some way, an eternal loss makes people think that they can achieve everything, it is a poet's means, deckard must someway find this belief system and he finds it from another who lived before him, most say that gaff or deckard is an android, this is an easy thought that contributes to nothing

  • Green Greeneya

From the sequel we know that he is not replicant.

  • Skywaymorrison

(Talking strictly about the movies here, not the book.) They are not mechanical androids, they are not cyborgs (like the Terminator) they are flesh and blood artificial humans. Proof: Rachel's bones were found in a grave in 2049.

  • Rich Schreiner

I can see the link to being a replicant in the line, 'you've done a man's job sir' but to claim it's the only possible link is a bit brain dead, primarily it is a link to being said to a 'young man' or to a boy. Which does make it more elegant. But to imply a replicant is the only target is wrong and undercuts it's elegance.

  • Alfo nix

You know that this is not the ending explained. This is just you saying that Deckard is a replicant.

  • arseniclullaby87

wait, what does Gaff say? i can't hear him

  • DIOSpeedDemon

I watched the original movie in the theater and never once thought decker was a skin job. Never once in all these years.

  • Evan Evans

... but if Deckard is a replicant, even Nexus 7, why does he not expire after 4 years? He turns up in 2049!

  • Ron Storzbach

Watching this discussion I immediately made the association with the White Zombie song, which it turns out was inspired by the movie.

  • Van Cleef Terror of Ariandel

Decard also doesn't share the same inhuman strength as the other replicants. He really does seem more human to me.

  • sexobscura

2049 was good that a Replicant gave birth how ridiculous are these films gonna get

  • Viejotrueno

Of course he's not a replicant and he can't be one.Deckard is Descartes, pronnounced in french is similar to Deckard, and it's not a coincidence, Philip K Dick did it on purpose, because he wanted to explore the idea of human existence by denying what Descartes said in XVII century, that body and mind are separated substances. The logical consequence of this is that animals are machines because they don't have mind; so, they act because of behavioristic laws. That's why in the novel synthetic animals are so important, and why replicants are considered similar to animals. But of course animals aren't machines (ethology demonstrates it), not replicants either. And Deckard is human because he's a guy that hunts replicants, he's a human opposite to replicants, because he has feelings, memories... until of course, he discover his terrible mistake. He discovers that replicants have feelings too, and that they are exactly like humans. That's why he become in love with a replicant. The perseverance on Deckard being a replicant is annoying, based in circumstancial arguments that can't be proved which leads into a nonsense. But not only the novel, the original movie (not the following and preposterous cuts and re-cuts) are perfectly crafted with the deepest of meaning

  • John Arthor

If I am a moron for thinking Deckard is human, then Ridley Scott is an idiot for writing it so. Look, this is a beautiful movie, and one of the best ever made (both of them), really. The message is of the utmost. It is about what is a soul and compassion. But for it to be consummate and work symbolically, Deckard had to be human. Thus, the human and Replicant being in love and their fruition being a child. The unicorn in Medieval and Renaissance times was a symbol of purity and grace, which could only be captured by a virgin. Deckerd changed after he saw the hurt in Rachael's eyes at his apartment. Damn Ridley, did you really miss that? Come on man.

  • Chauncey Perkins

Wtf he was a freaking replicate?, I can't..

  • Lee Wright

If replicants are illegal and must be terminated on Earth, then why is the police department using them? Why would they allow him to retire in the first place and then bring him back into use? It doesn't make sense.

  • Chris Stokes

Decker isn't a replicant because han shoots first.

  • pwilliams360

Anybody know the background music playing?

  • Darna Bedwell

"Whether you're human or something more". What could be more? Surely you mean or something else.

  • Rich Schreiner

Since believing Deckard is a replicant I have believed Deckard and Rachael were Tyrells Adam and Eve. If you read the book the earth has become so poisonous that all that remain are humans that are degraded from radiation. I believe the replicants are more resistant to the radiation and destined to take over the planet as the new human race.

  • D. Paul Gladstone

My vision is different than yours, but then you're an idiot to believe Deckard is a replicant. I believe Harrison Ford has the character down pat. Directors sometimes never know the story, just ensure people watch it. So who do you think knows the answer.

  • wayne Thorley

    Deckard no replicant.

  • Ron Storzbach

Deckard as a replicant? Never got that out of the film, he showed human weaknesses throughout the whole thing. Pretty much the opposite of the others. If he is a replicant, it kind of destroys the point of Roy saving him at the end.

  • schizoidboy

In some ways Gaff is the most human character in the movie. He certainly does not have the attributes we might give the Replicants; he's short and scraggly looking, but at the same time he's definitely multi-ethnic as most humans at this point are bound to be, swarthy looks with light blue eyes hints at a wide heritage. In the original with a voice over by Harrison Ford it is hinted that perhaps the old prejudices no longer exist. He remarks how the one cops is the sort who would use racial slurs towards African Americans but this is perhaps no longer done, and perhaps the detective is African American himself even if he doesn't appear to be. In this future all the prejudice is directed towards the androids.

  • CookiePuss SonOfFudgie

    Deckard is a rapist.

  • Mark Douglas

Really, who gives a fuck if Deckard is a replicant or not it doesn't affect the story in any way, shape, or form. He is still a goddamn Blade runner! I get tired of this "question".

  • sargint rock

Listen up soyboys, joyboys and any assorted snowflakes that might be included in my training platoon! There are plenty of Males around but few Men and when yer complemented for doing a man's job, it is indeed a complement!

  • Martin K Dodd Channel

I prefer the original ending because for the last 2 hours you've been watching this dark, moody movie and then boom, your transported to this bright natural landscape which could suggest; 1 Deckard and Rachel are on an off world colony. 2 The ending is a motif for Deckard and Rachel's love escaping them to a better and in some ways an uncertain future.

  • Steven Bruce

Whether you're human or something more... or less.

  • Jaundiced Jape

“If you don’t get it, you’re a moron” says the guy trying to compensate for his own failure. Sounds like every thin-skinned artist who expects everyone else to understand what’s in his head.

  • indviduation

Relpicants are robots are just test tube humans? If test tube humans with a set time limit hence their human.

  • Chris Miles

All those who smoke are replicants, but all replicants do necessarily smoke.

  • MomKat Pat

White Zombie - "More Human Than Human"It was written about "Blade Runner"

  • EverDownward

Ridley Scott is fucking insane if he thinks I'll ever consider Deckard a replicant. It knocks all the impact out of the ending if he's not human. A jaded human learning about humanity from an android desperately wishing he was human hits way harder than an android telling another android what it means to be human.

  • Randal Rand

No, he is not a Replicant (period). What kind of nonsense is this?!
